Universidad Alberto Hurtado is a non-profit institution with a public vocation that offers the country an educational project based on the Jesuit tradition and legacy of 486 years. Founded on October 20, 1997 by the Society of Jesus, it is part of a network of 200 Jesuit institutions of higher education, present in 65 countries around the world. The university joins the tradition of training professionals of integrity, under the academic rigor and creative spirit. It owes its name to the Chilean saint, the Jesuit priest, lawyer and doctor in education, Alberto Hurtado Cruchaga, with the purpose of perpetuating his spirit in the academic and university work.

The Alberto Hurtado University has its foundations in the trajectory of the Latin American Institute of Social Studies (ILADES), which since 1965 was a center of reflection and high-level postgraduate education in Latin America and the intellectual and critical spirit of the Center for Research and Development of Education (CIDE), with more than 50 years contributing to public policy in the country; in addition to the research of the Bellarmino Center.

In its founding charter, the University declares “to employ, in the field of higher education and research, the principles of Ignatian pedagogy which, with an open and critical spirit, brings faith and culture into dialogue; it promotes justice, forms free persons who, inspired by the Gospel of Jesus and solidly instructed in the sciences, place themselves at the service of God and mankind”.

The objective of the university, transversal to its professors, authorities and students, is to transform Chilean society with professionals of excellence. To this end, it offers a human and integral formation, with academic programs that together with its general formation, flexible curricula and practical approach, provides minors as a second certification and complementary formation.

The Alberto Hurtado University was born with the main purpose of building an academic space of excellence, non-profit, open, diverse, tolerant and inclusive. In its vocation and commitment to public service, the university decided to join the free higher education system in 2016, with the aim of contributing to an inclusive educational policy that has always been part of its mission.
